Our Financials

The St Vincent’s Health Australia Managed Group operating result was an operating deficit of $20.9m for the year ended 30 June 2020 (2019: $8.41m surplus). The operating result reflects the impact of COVID-19, particularly on residential aged care, as well as the transition and ramp up of newly acquired aged care facilities. It also reflects ongoing challenges such as funding for aged care, public hospitals and declining private health insurance membership.

Due to the COVID pandemic, elective surgery restrictions were imposed on all hospitals from March 2020, creating a significant level of uncertainty. St Vincent’s Health entered partnership agreements with governments in NSW, Queensland and Victoria to maintain the full capacity of its private hospitals and make them available to assist with the national COVID-19 response. The financial impact of COVID-19 on the organisation’s private hospitals division is estimated at $9.5m despite the receipt of government subsidies totalling $37.6m.
To contain the spread of the virus and to prioritise the health and safety of patients and staff, state governments similarly imposed a range of restrictions on public hospitals including placing limits on elective surgeries, reducing activity, restricting non-essential visitors, cutting visitor hours, introducing COVID-19 testing, establishing working from home arrangements, and transferring inpatients to private health facilities.
The Department of Health and Human Services in Victoria provided funding to St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne to compensate for lost revenue with certain direct and indirect COVID-19 costs also reimbursed. The hospital also received essential PPE free-of-charge under the state supply arrangement.
The NSW Ministry of Health provided funding to St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney compensating for incremental expenditure in accordance with the National Partnership on COVID-19 Response, including PPE, additional bulk liquid oxygen capacity, and the setting up and operation of testing clinics.
COVID-19 also impacted the organisation’s aged care division during the year with lower occupancy levels resulting in reduced revenue. The division’s pandemic response contributed additional operating costs related to planning, quality and compliance, sourcing appropriate PPE, and increasing staffing to manage infection control and visitations.
Proactive action has been taken by the Group to draw down $120m from its debt facility in order to mitigate any potential liquidity risk across organisation.
Effective 1 September 2019, the John Paul Village business and assets (excluding land) transitioned to St Vincent’s Care Services from the Trustees of Catholic Aged Care Sydney (TCAS). The site was renamed St Vincent’s Care Services Heathcote.
